about

As part of its BNE Archive Series of Brisbane electronic music, Trans:Com is proud to make available again Victor Xray's classic 2010 dubstep album. Previously only released on the Xray Dubs website, and for a long time unavailable, this brilliant album flew under the radar and richly deserves its reissue.

From the late ‘80s to the early ‘90s Now:Zero was a Sydney-based electro- pop project of Scot McPhee and Simm Steel, and for a period also included Stewart Lawler on keyboards and production duties.
Now:Zero appeared on Volition’s classic High dance compilation, and – as one of the earliest collaborators with the Clan Analogue collective – also appeared on some of the Clan’s original editions including the Deep Three 12” and the Cog double-CD. Connecting with Brisbane’s Trans:Com in 1993, Now:Zero also included 2 tracks on the Evidence compilation.

For about 10 years from the mid ‘90s, Scot Mcphee recorded as The Dread King and Nerve Agent (or Nerve Agent In Dub) – veering into various styles including ambient, house, breakbeat, and dub. As Nerve Agent, Scot released a full album G-Type Nerve Agent, a 12” It Don’t Mean Nuthin and numerous compilation appearances including Cognition, Freaky Loops, Cognition Three, Solid Gold – Cognition Four, In Version, ReCognition, and the Clan Recordable sets – all on Clan Analogue.

In 2005 Scot made the move to Brisbane, and upon reaching the
‘offworld colonies’ started producing, releasing, and remixing as Victor Xray – first appearing on the Clan compilation Doppler Shift. The Victor Xray project (aka X-Ray Sound System) began exploring smooth dubstep and hyperdub influences, melded with the breakbeat and dub of Scot’s earlier incarnations.

Victor Xray’s Dark Arts Of Dub was released in 2007 – on CD and digital by Trans:Com, and as a limited edition 12” on Scot’s own Autonomous Production imprint. Victor Xray has performed live a number of times, including feature appearances at Trans:Com’s Silhouette Series and Upgrade events.

During this time additional Victor Xray material began appearing on Scot’s Xray Dubs website. including the full album Lamplighter, video clips, and other new tracks. As Victor Xray, Scot also produced dub-style remixes for Projekt Inertia and The Isle.
